15 October 2007 Dental laser technology has a future

The introduction of laser technology to dentists has been slower than to other medical specialties, despite the fact that laser applications have long been proven to be beneficial.
High Tech Laser contracted the market research corporation, Compagnie, to conduct a research into the relationship between the smile, happiness and the dentist to determine why this is the case and to see what are the exact needs are of the patient and the dentist in the area of laser technology.
Remarkable research results have just been released.

High Tech Laser is a division of B&Co, a medical group that specializes in laser technology for many medical sectors and applications. Within the B&Co group, High Tech Laser specializes in a complete line of dental lasers, with the shared trait of offering the best physical quality in the function of the various indications. The product line includes quality equipment for cavity preparations (Er:YAG-laser), sterilization (Nd:YAG-laser) and photochemical bleaching (Smartbleach).

Treatment with added value.

In this day and age, it is hard to imagine a medical treatment without the use of laser technology. The added value of the laser in the domains of ophthalmology, skin rejuvenation, minimal invasive liposuction, the treatment of stretch marks, scars, varicose veins, birth marks and pigmentation problems as well as in tattoo removal and hair transplants and removals has been proven for quite some time and is supported by prominent international universities and physicians.
Furthermore, dental laser technology of dentistry without anesthesia offers attractive advantages and comfort for the dentist as well as the patient. Even so, High Tech Laser still observed that the introduction of the laser into the dentist office was slower than that of other medical sectors. To identify why this is the case, a number of questions needed to be asked and answered such as “Does the dental laser technology answer the needs of the patient?” and “Are the needs of the dentists and patients the same?”.

Dentists make people happy!

On May 17, 18 and 19 Esola - an international organization promoting laser technology through training and sharing knowledge - held their bi-yearly conference in Bruges. The organizers were also looking forward with great anticipation to the results of the research carried out by the market research corporation, Compagnie, on behalf of High Tech Laser.
Two remarkable observations derived from these questions, immediately stood out like a red flag.

The first observation was that “dentists make people happy”.
The Belgian people like to go to the dentist, which is the exact opposite of what you might expect and of those that love to go, they appear to be happier. Additionally, people that enjoy going to their dentist show their teeth more often when they laugh as opposed to those who do not like to pay a visit to their dentist. As much as 81% of Belgian respondents are happy with their teeth, while 80% said their teeth are healthy and 75% think their teeth are pretty.

The second observation was that “some dentists make their patients happier than others”. The research also brought a number of arguments to the surface.
Forty two percent of Belgians think it is important that the dentist keeps the treatment pain-free. Pain-free dental treatment methods are among one of the deciding factors in choosing tomorrow’s dentist.
One third of Belgians don’t like to visit the dentist out of fear for painful treatment (30%), anesthesia (14%), the use of a drill (9%) and a bad experience (7%). More than half of the people (53%) reported that they would not fear visiting the dentist if a pain-free treatment method was used.
It appears that more Belgians like white teeth (65%) and straight teeth (47%) than healthy teeth (36%) when asked about teeth satisfaction. Moreover, people who now do not expose their teeth when they laugh, would do so if their teeth were white and straight.
Conclusion: The dentist can make patients happier by offering an esthetic treatment alongside the medical treatment and by performing both treatments pain-free.
